The Bank of Canada today held its target for the overnight rate at 5%, with the Bank Rate at 5¼% and the deposit rate at 5%. The Bank is continuing its policy of quantitative tightening.

The Daily — Retail trade, November 2023 (statcan.gc.ca)
Retail sales decreased 0.2% to $66.6 billion in November. Sales were down in four of nine subsectors and were led by decreases at food and beverage retailers (-1.4%).

Core retail sales—which exclude gasoline stations and fuel vendors and motor vehicle and parts dealers—were down 0.6% in November.

The Daily — Payroll employment, earnings and hours, and job vacancies, November 2023 (statcan.gc.ca)
The number of employees receiving pay and benefits from their employer—measured as “payroll employment” in the Survey of Employment, Payrolls and Hours—decreased by 88,300 (-0.5%) in November, following a decline of 24,000 (-0.1%) in October.
Most of the decline in November was recorded in elementary and secondary schools (-63,000; -7.5%), and this was associated with strike action in Quebec’s education sector. In accordance with the “payroll employment” concept of the survey, persons who are on strike for the entire survey reference week are excluded from the payroll employment count for the month. Excluding the decline in this industry, the overall decrease in national payroll employment was 25,300 (-0.1%) in November.

Meanwhile, overall job vacancies edged up to 653,000 in November, following little change in October and five consecutive monthly declines from May to September.

The Daily — Wholesale trade, November 2023 (statcan.gc.ca)
Wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) grew 0.9% to $82.5 billion in November. Sales increased in four of the seven subsectors, led by the motor vehicle and motor vehicle parts and accessories subsector and the building material and supplies subsector. On an annual basis, wholesale sales (excluding petroleum, petroleum products, and other hydrocarbons and excluding oilseed and grain) were 0.2% lower in November compared with the same month one year earlier.

The Daily — Consumer Price Index, December 2023 (statcan.gc.ca)
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.4% on a year-over-year basis in December, following a 3.1% increase in November. While gasoline prices fell on a monthly basis for the fourth month in a row, the headline acceleration was largely the result of higher year-over-year prices for gasoline in December (+1.4%) compared with November (-7.7%). This was the result of a base-year effect where gasoline prices fell more on a monthly basis in December 2022 than they did in December 2023. Excluding gasoline, the headline CPI slowed year over year, from 3.6% in November to 3.5% in December.T

The Daily — Consumer Price Index: Annual review, 2023 (statcan.gc.ca)
The Consumer Price Index (CPI) rose 3.9% on an annual average basis in 2023, following a 40-year high increase of 6.8% in 2022 and a 3.4% increase in 2021. Aside from 2022, the annual average increase in 2023 is the largest since 1991. Excluding energy, the annual average CPI rose 4.5% in 2023 compared with 5.7% in 2022.

While price growth for goods slowed 5.5 percentage points in 2023, price growth for services only slowed 0.4 percentage points, resulting in a 4.6% increase. Deceleration in homeowners’ replacement cost and other owned accommodation expenses due to base-year effects was almost entirely offset by acceleration in mortgage interest cost, and to a lesser extent, rent.
